Africans genetically have short hair compared to whites but that doesn’t mean African women can’t grow their hair long. Obviously the afro doesn’t fall back but they can grow thick and healthy looking hair. The afro is the pride of an African woman and this woman can’t grow a healthy and long hair because of these reasons
- They don’t love it enough
- Introduction of damaging chemicals to the hair
- They don’t show care
- Inadequate balance diet
- Too much extension
- Stress
- They don’t spend enough money on their hair
- Long duration of hair extension or hairstyle
- They rarely take food supplements
1. They don’t love it enough

When I completed high school in 2013 , I started growing my hair but it was difficult for me because it was thick and always tangled so it made grooming painful for me . Though I didn’t want to perm my hair I wanted it to be bearable to wear. Someone recommended a harsh chemical with this awful smell to me . It was suppose to texturize my hair but ended up perming it. I didn’t love my hair in all aspect and I regret it.
2. Introduction of damaging chemicals to the hair

After using that product my hair started breaking for almost three years straight. My hair was always short for three years and the smell stayed in my hair for almost six years because anytime my hair gets wet I smell the product . It was my greatest nightmare. Some examples of damaging chemicals are sulphate and parabens in some shampoos ,hair dye ,styling gels among others
3. They don’t show care

Before I met my hairdresser , I was doing everything or visiting one salon to another. My hair wasn’t consistently taken care of . All these salons were using different products which kept damaging my hair. I was absolutely not taking care of my hair. When you don’t love something , you don’t care for it and that’s exactly what happened.
4. Inadequate balanced diet

A well balanced diet takes a big part in the growth of hair, especially the protein aspect. Proteins like beans, fish , meat ,milk ,ground nut among others. Vitamins from tomatoes onion, pepper , garden eggs. Personally I grow good amount of hair so I really don’t track my food in take but if my hair grows then it means I’m eating the right food.
5.Too much extension

Extensions are foreign hair or fiber that is added to the hair to enhance one’s beauty. It isn’t bad to add extension to your hair but too much of it can stress the hair. When installing extensions products like bonding glue and spirit are used which damage the hair if not cared well. All I saying is let your hair breath
6. Stress

Statistically 74% of women are informally employed and it is a less rosy picture . Some of this informal employment includes hawking which tends to bald the head through hair loss. You may ask, what about those who are career women?. Well nothing on planet earth is easy not even sleeping all day. One way or the other stress finds us but one is more stressed than the other. There are different factors that make individuals stress like not taking breaks when needed, treating oneself to avoid vacation, finding a hobby, and taking care of oneself and the majority of African women do opposite of these .When you are stressed how can you take care of yourself self to begin with.
7. They don’t spend much on their hair.

I don’t mean break your bank to get your hair done. Hair care in general isn’t cheap but there are affordable hair products that surprisingly good . Though I don’t encourage DIY’s when it comes to the hair you can buy and use some good products at home but visit the salon often for professional care and treatment .
8. long duration of extension or hairstyle

Let your hair take a break to breathe for a second. Some women think the ultimate goal in achieving a long hair is by keeping braids or extension for a long period of time ,my mom is a clear example. My mom used to keep her braids up till four to five months which is one road to a damaged hair . Reason being dirt clog up between the hair and extension which tangles the hair and the cuticles get clog preventing the scalp from breathing. In this case blood circulation is poor thereby preventing nutrients distribution.
9. They rarely take food supplements

Some African women only take food supplements when they loose weight , I bet they don’t even know the nutrient that keeps their hair growing. Meanwhile food supplements doesn’t just boost appetite or boost the production of blood but also provides other nutrients that improves the appearance and well being of the body, nails and hair. In some case it improves retentive memories. For a woman who menstrate every month , I believe at least every three months you should take food supplements. Just saying
